Bronson Pediatric Critical Care

If your child is in the hospital, you're here all day, every day. So is his doctor. Our pediatric critical care physicians are experts in hospital care for children. They're here 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure someone is always on hand to answer your questions.

Today, many primary care doctors see patients only at their offices-not at the hospital. If your child is an inpatient at The Children's Hospital at Bronson, you may be referred to a doctor specializing in hospital medicine for children, called a pediatric critical care physician.

These doctors are experienced, board certified pediatricians who provide both intensive and general inpatient care. They meet daily as a team to review patient care and consult with other specialists, if needed. They also communicate regularly with your child's primary care doctor.

If your child needs care in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), he or she will be cared for by our specially trained pediatric intensivists.

You're a Specialist Too
Our doctors believe you are an important partner in your child's care. The more you understand about your child's illness and treatment, the better you can help prevent complications and future problems. Our dialogue with parents is two-way-with lots of listening, conferring and decision-making as a team.

Services that Reduce Pain and Anxiety for Kids
Bronson Pediatric Critical Care (under Bronson's Pediatric Referral Service) offers sedation medication and guided imagery to help children through painful or anxiety-producing procedures, such as:

  • MRI
  • CT scan
  • VCUG (voiding cystourethrogram)
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Joint aspiration
  • Colonoscopy

We can review your child's medical information to see whether these services could be helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is moderate sedation?
Moderate sedation is a sedated or relaxed state in which patients can still maintain breathing on their own. We decide which medication best suits the patient and discuss the risk and benefits with parents prior to sedation. Our doctor and sedation nurse are present throughout the procedure.

What is guided imagery?
Guided imagery is another term for hypnosis. It's a way to change children's perception of their environment during a medical procedure. They focus on their imagination, go into a relaxed state and feel less anxious.

Our doctors can tailor this process to a child's age and interests. Styles of guided imagery range from blowing bubbles to going on an imaginary adventure.

Guided imagery gives children a sense of control over their minds and bodies without help from sedation medication. Most children age four and older are candidates. The doctor will talk with your child and then discuss possibilities with you so the best decision can be made for your child.
