Bronson Trauma & Emergency Surgery

Specially trained trauma surgeons are on site around the clock at Bronson. They stand ready to provide critical treatment in the first "golden hour" after a serious injury. It's another reason Bronson is designated as a Level I Trauma Center for adults and children, the only one southwest Michigan.

Our trauma surgeons treat adults and children who sustain life-threatening injuries from automobile crashes, fires, violence, falls and accidents. Their surgery suites are equipped and staffed 24 hours a day.

After treatment in the Trauma Center, many patients are admitted to the Trauma Care Unit, where the surgeons oversee their recovery. The surgeons also see patients in their clinic after discharge, if needed.

These doctors are part of a trauma response team that includes other physicians, specially trained nurses, and heath professionals who work together to treat critically ill patients.

Bronson's trauma surgeons travel to hospitals in the region to provide information, ongoing education and case reviews for doctors who have referred trauma patients to Bronson. They also oversee Bronson's Trauma Registry, which tracks injuries and treatments of thousands of patients in hospitals across southwest Michigan.

Level I Trauma Center
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) recently re-verified Bronson Methodist Hospital as a Level I Trauma Center for both adult and pediatric trauma care. That means Bronson has been recognized for providing the highest level of care for critically injured patients. Bronson has been a Level I Trauma Center since 1989, and remains the only Level I Trauma Center for adults and children in our region.

Bronson Adult Critical Care
Bronson's Adult Critical Care specialists are internal medicine doctors with additional training in critical care medicine. They provide intensive treatment for patients with life-threatening conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, severe breathing problems, burns, brain injuries and serious infections.

These conditions often affect many areas of the body and can cause organs to stop working. Critical care patients often need multiple medicines and specialized equipment, such as ventilators to help with breathing. Our specialists provide continuous treatment for these patients in an intensive care unit, where they can be closely monitored.

More About ICUs
Bronson's adult intensive care units (ICUs) include the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Trauma Care Unit (TCU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and the Burn Unit.

Seriously ill patients get the best treatment when they are grouped together into specific areas of the hospital. That's why hospitals have ICUs. Each ICU has specialized equipment and specially trained caregivers, with a higher nurse-to-patient ratio than in other hospital units.
