Bronson Trauma & Emergency Surgery Specially trained trauma surgeons are on site around the clock at Bronson. They stand ready to provide critical treatment in the first, "golden hour" after a serious injury. It's another reason Bronson is designated as a Level I Trauma Center for adults and children, the only one southwest Michigan. Our trauma surgeons treat adults and children who sustain life-threatening injuries from automobile crashes, fires, violence, falls and accidents. Their surgery suites are equipped and staffed 24 hours a day. After treatment in the Trauma Center, many patients are admitted to the Trauma Care Unit, where the surgeons oversee their recovery. The surgeons also see patients in their clinic after discharge, if needed. These doctors are part of a trauma response team that includes other physicians, specially trained nurses and heath professionals who work together to treat critically ill patients. Bronson's trauma surgeons travel to hospitals in the region to provide information, ongoing education and case reviews for doctors who have referred trauma patients to Bronson. They also oversee Bronson's Trauma Registry, which tracks injuries and treatments of thousands of patients in hospitals across southwest Michigan. Level I Trauma Center Bronson Adult Critical Care These conditions often affect many areas of the body and can cause organs to stop working. Critical care patients often need multiple medicines and specialized equipment, such as ventilators to help with breathing. Our specialists provide continuous treatment for these patients in an intensive care unit, where they can be closely monitored. More About ICUs Seriously ill patients get the best treatment when they are grouped together into specific areas of the hospital. That's why hospitals have ICUs. Each ICU has specialized equipment and specially trained caregivers, with a higher nurse-to-patient ratio than in other hospital units.
