Bronson's Workforce Development Initiative One of the focal points of this initiative is Informing students about healthcare careers. By year 2010, it is forecasted that 3.1 million new jobs in healthcare will be needed, along with 2.2 million replacement jobs. To address estimated future shortages in the healthcare workforce, Bronson has developed creative, innovative and fun programs to educate students about the many career opportunities in healthcare. Bronson Summer Day Camp Program The Summer Camps are open to fourth, fifth and sixth graders interested in learning more about healthcare careers. At the week-long camp, employees from several areas of the hospital present their career of choice including hands-on activities, such as making a finger cast and tie-dying lab coats! The campers also job shadow seasoned professionals and create a video newscast about their week at the camp. Students also participate in fun activities, such as a picnic at the Bronson Park and a boot camp at the Bronson Athletic Club. Lock-In Bronson annually hosts a "Lock-In" for seventh and eighth graders at the Bronson Athletic Club. The Lock-In is open to children of Bronson employees and a friend. Students learn about health care careers, and how hospital departments work together to provide excellent patient care. Education is combined with many fun activities, including swimming, basketball and karaoke. School Talks and Tours Bronson continually provides talks and tours to area middle school and high school students to promote healthcare careers. Classes also visit Bronson throughout the year for tours and presentations. VolunTEEN Bronson is active in the community's VolunTEEN program, designed for teens, age 15 through 18. This is a nine-week program that provides orientation to the hospital and volunteer experience in a specific department. Departments offering VolunTEEN experiences include: Child Life and Pediatrics, Senior Services, Managed Care, Community Home Health, the Breastfeeding Boutique and Bronson Vicksburg Hospital. Over 50 teenagers participate annually, completing a minimum of 30 hours each. References are provided and credit for school classes are given when appropriate. Career Event Bronson hosts healthcare career events for teens (as well as adults looking to change careers) to explore different careers available in the healthcare industry. Participants are able to talk with representatives from local colleges and universities, hear from hospital professionals, learn about the wide variety of careers available in healthcare and get financial aid and scholarship information.
