Post-Graduate Year 1 Pharmacy Residency Program

About the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Program Description:
Bronson Methodist Hospital’s PGY1 residency program is a 12-month ASHP-accredited postgraduate training program in health-system pharmacy practice. The program was established in 1963, and has continued to develop and change over the years as the practice of pharmacy has progressed. Bronson currently accepts two PGY1 residents each year. Residents complete various required and elective rotations throughout the year to meet predetermined goals and objectives as well as their personal and professional goals. Residents are also exposed to an assortment of teaching opportunities as well as to a variety of presentation and project management activities. Residents experience pharmacy practice in a wide variety of practice areas, including acute care, ambulatory care, administration, as well as specialty consult areas.

Program Purpose Statement:
To prepare pharmacist clinicians to practice in direct patient care positions, adjunct, or clinical faculty positions, or to pursue post-graduate year two training

Program Goals/Intended Outcomes of Residency Training:

  • Residents will become proficient and confident clinical practitioners in a variety of patient care settings.
  • Residents will develop clinical and non-clinical skills to be equipped with the knowledge and expertise to provide optimal pharmaceutical care within the complex health care environment.
  • Residents will display personal drive and enthusiasm to become leaders in pharmacy practice.
  • Residents will develop a personal strategy to remain current with developing therapies and medical literature.
  • Residents will be accountable for educating others (health care professionals, patients, and the public) on medication-related topics.
  • Residents will develop a personal philosophy of practice and exhibit a commitment to the profession of pharmacy.
  • Residents will maintain a professional ethic.

Highlights of Bronson’s PGY1 Residency Program:
PGY1 residents at Bronson Methodist Hospital have a great deal of flexibility in selecting rotation experiences that address their personal and professional goals. All residents are required to complete experiences in core subject areas, essential to the pharmacy practitioner, but the program for each resident varies, based upon his or her goals, interests, and/or previous experiences. The residents schedule will be modified throughout the year as the resident’s interest change and develop. Residents become integrated into the pharmacy clinical and ancillary staff, and are viewed as both a learner and a colleague. Residents have multiple opportunities to teach students, patients, other health care professionals, and the public. The Bronson department of pharmacy maintains a close relationship with clinical and adjunct faculty of Ferris State University’s College of Pharmacy (www.ferris.edu/htmls/colleges/pharmacy/index.cfm). Bronson also maintains an affiliation with medical residents from the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies/Michigan State University, (www.kcms.msu.edu) therefore, it is very much a learning environment. Residents will also develop skills in oral and written communication, will participate in various leadership and practice management committees, as well as participate in local, regional, and national pharmacy organizations.
