Bronson delivers approximately 3,200 babies and treats more than 34,000 children each year from a nine-county area in southwest Michigan. Nurses at The Bronson BirthPlace and The Children’s Hospital at Bronson practice in a facility with all-private rooms and a design that incorporates the latest technology, patient- and family-centered care, and a healing environment.

At Bronson Methodist Hospital, The Bronson BirthPlace provides care for delivered and expectant, stable and high-risk, maternity patients and their families. As the highest level perinatal center in the region, The Bronson BirthPlace offers unparalleled access to specialists, including 24-hour on-site neonatologists and perinatologists, and the region’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit. All of our obstetric providers, including OB/GYNs, family practice physicians and certified nurse midwives, collaborate with our highly-trained labor and delivery nursing staff.

The Bronson BirthPlace consists of three main areas:

  • Labor and delivery, with 7 maternal triage beds; 12 labor, delivery and recovery rooms (LDRs); and 2 cesarean section suites, one specially designed for multiples, with adjacent recovery area
  • Mother/Baby Unit containing 40 beds
  • Antepartum Unit with 7 beds, and a Special Care Nursery.

The Children’s Hospital at Bronson is the only children’s hospital in southwest Michigan, and is recognized by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). Family-centered services are provided for patients, from pre-term to 17 years of age. In addition, our children’s hospital philosophy of care extends throughout the outpatient services, including trauma and emergency, outpatient testing, radiology, and rehabilitation.

The Children’s Hospital at Bronson includes:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) — a unit with 45 all-private rooms offering care 24 hours a day for patients ranging from extremely small premature infants to full-term newborn infants. Neonatologists and specially-trained nurses provide care using a multidisciplinary team approach.
  • Pediatric Unit — a 24-bed unit offering children and adolescents medical care, including surgical recovery, orthopedic, cardiac, neurological, and oncology care.
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) — a 12-bed unit staffed by a team of pediatric intensivists and nurses who specialize in using state-of-the-art technology to provide life-saving care for critically ill and injured children. Bronson is a Level I Trauma Center and major destination for pediatric trauma.

Nurse educators support professional nursing 24 hours a day. These individuals collaborate with staff and management to develop and implement programs to enhance professional nursing at Bronson.

Some key features include:

  • Pediatric and NICU Nurse Fellowships, which offer an individualized program featuring didactic, learning lab and clinical experiences
  • Guidance by trained nursing preceptors
  • Mentoring with experienced staff assisting new staff on an ongoing basis with clinical development and assimilation into a new work environment.

In addition to the nursing and support staff positions involved with the care of patients, case managers, nursing managers, nursing unit coordinators, transport nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, lactation consultants, child life specialists, pediatric rehabilitation specialists, a palliative care team, and clinical pharmacists all support the positive outcomes of Bronson’s patients.
