Come join the patient care team at Bronson Methodist Hospital — a leading regional medical facility in southwest Michigan. Bronson Methodist Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center and regional Burn Center for surgical patients throughout southwest Michigan. Surgical nurses at Bronson practice in a facility with all-private rooms and a design that incorporates the latest technology with a healing environment.
Bronson incorporates state-of-the-art equipment to perform highly technical surgical procedures. In fact, more than 20 percent of the surgeries performed at Bronson utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques. Multidisciplinary teams combine technology with clinical excellence to provide high-quality care for patients in a caring, healing environment that includes all-private postoperative recovery rooms.
Specialty services include general, gynecology, vascular, endoscopic, urology, bariatric, ophthalmic, ENT, pediatric, orthopedic, neurosurgical, and cardiothoracic. We utilize specialty teams in all services that serve as a resource to other staff members.
The following is an overview of each of the surgery units:
- General Surgery Unit (GSU): 47-bed unit providing inpatient care to post-surgical, post-procedural and overflow medical patients with a high patient turnover during a 24-hour period. A vascular specialty team of nurses compliment the staff. 8 and 12 hour shifts are utilized.
- Inpatient Surgery: Eight operating rooms are available, with three rooms equipped for open-heart surgeries and two laminar airflow rooms for use in orthopedic implant procedures. 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts are utilized with varying start times throughout the day. Rotation of shifts and weekend coverage, as well as stand-by call, are maintained for 7 days/week, 24-hours per day to provide in house coverage. Surgical Services Float Pool staff practice in both the ambulatory and inpatient settings.
- Outpatient Surgery: Eight operating rooms and two procedure rooms are available. Core staff are scheduled in each of the three areas, while another group of RN and PCA staff rotate between the pre-op, intra-op and post-op settings. This unit operates Monday through Friday from 7a.m. to 8p.m. 8,10,12 hour shifts are utilized with varying start times throughout the day.
- Cardiac Surgery Unit (CSU): Six-bed progressive intensive care unit providing immediate post operative care of traditional CABG surgery, valve replacement and repair, and off pump CABG (OPCAB). CSU also cares for overnight PACU patients and overflow critical care patients. 12-hour shifts are utilized.
- Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU): This unit provides care for all recovery patients, from neonatal to adult. 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts are utilized.
Nurse educators support professional nursing 24 hours a day. A Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Nurse Liaison are dedicated to the Surgical Services division. These individuals collaborate with staff and management to develop and implement programs to enhance professional nursing at Bronson.
Key educational opportunities include:
- Individualized orientation based on nursing experience
- Peri-Operative Nursing Internship program is available to all new RN graduates, or experienced nurses lacking skills in the surgical arena. While the focus is on the intraoperative phase, experience in preop and recovery room are included. Course content is based on the Association of Operating Room Nurses curriculum standards with specific modules focused on environmental techniques and equipment. Preceptored surgical experiences are fostered during this six-month learning opportunity. A 24-month commitment within the operating room is required following the internship.
- Mentoring with experienced staff to facilitate new staff on an ongoing basis with clinical development and assimilation into a new work environment.
In addition to the nursing and support staff positions involved with the care of patients, case managers, nurse managers, surgical clinical coordinators, nursing unit coordinators, RN first assistants (RNFA), surgical technologists, respiratory therapists, social workers, and pharmacists all support the outcomes of Bronson’s patients.
