What is the DAISY Award?
The DAISY Foundation was established in 2001 after the death of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died of ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura) so DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Patrick and his family were awed by the care he received from the nurses. The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses was conceived by the Barnes family as a way to say thank you to nurses around the country. They believe nurses are truly “unsung heroes.”

The “Thank a Nurse” brochures explain the criteria for nomination and include the nomination form. Patients, families, peers, physicians and colleagues can make nominations. Nominations will be accepted throughout the year, and each quarter three nurses from across the organization will be recognized. The criteria recognizes a nurse who does one or more of the following:

• Makes a special connection with the patient and family
• Includes patients and families in the planning of their care
• Does an excellent job educating patients and their families
• Works well with the healthcare team to meet patient and family needs
• Makes patients and their families feel comfortable
• Goes above and beyond

There are many hospitals across the country that have joined the DAISY Foundation to bring this award to their nurses. Bronson is partnering with the DAISY Foundation to reward our outstanding nurses in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. We are excited to embark on this campaign to honor nurses at Bronson throughout the year and for years to come.
