Medical Intensive Care Unit

Scope of Service

Overview:

  • Size of the unit: 16 beds
  • Source of the patients: ER, direct admit, transfers

Types and Ages of Patients Served:

  • MICU provides adult medical intensive care and adult cardiac intensive care.
  • The primary population served is adults and geriatric patient populations.

Description of Internal and External Customers:

Internal customers served include other nursing units, physicians, patients, families, and all ancillary departments of the hospital. External customers we serve include, but are not limited to: home health care services, area nursing homes, area rehabilitation facilities, medical supply companies, other contracted medical service companies, outlying hospitals, and the local community.

Conditions and Diagnosis Treated:

Conditions treated on the unit may include, but are not limited to:

  • Cardiac – Myocardial Infarctions, Congestive Heart Failure, post CABG patients, Cardiomyopathy, Chest Pain, Cardiogenic Shock, Aortic Aneurysm, Arrhythmias.
  • Medical – Sepsis, Pneumonia, Pancreatitis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Drug Overdose, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Change in LOC, Enemia, Emphysema, Seizures, Stroke

Types of Services & Care Provided:

Services provided include: MICU provides adult critical care. This includes electronic monitoring of vital signs and Central line values (CVP, Swan-Ganz numbers, ScVo2 values, arterial pressures), insertion of diagnostic/treatment procedures, Ventilator assistance, advanced management of IV drug treatments.

The nursing staff is provided by a team consisting of: A RN director, manager, and Unit Coordinators, make up the management portion of the team. Our MICU team also includes a clinical nurse specialist, educator and RNs.

Three intensivists, residents, cardiologists, and a PA from each cardiology practice provide the medical care for the patient.

Other multi-disciplinary team members involved in the care of the patient include respiratory therapy, radiology, dietary, pharmacy, case management, hyper alimentation nurses, Employee control/Infection Control nurses, stomal therapy nurses, outcomes coordinators, and regional nurse coordinators.

Sites Where Services & Care is Provided:

Most diagnostic services are provided at the bedside. They include lab draws, portable x-rays, pulse oximetry treatments, EKG’s, PT/OT functions, endoscopy procedures, chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, and pericardialcentesis.

For other tests, such as CT, MRI, invasive radiologic exams, patients are transported to the Radiology Department. Nursing staff and various multidisciplinary team members as appropriate escort the patients. Other treatments and procedures performed at the bedside include, but are not limited to Central Line insertion, Swan-Ganz and PreSep catheters, arterial lines, IABP insertion, Trach insertion, and Bronchoscopy.

Times When Services & Care is Provided:

Care is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
