During Case conferences, students review their written verbatim accounts of pastoral conversations. For this an interdisciplinary case consultant is frequently invited. Other seminars include Didactic Seminar, Theological Reflection Seminar, Interpersonal Relations Group and Individual Supervision.
Academic courses are credited with a pass/fail grade. The written work required each week includes verbatim accounts of encountered pastoral care, journaling and different assignments related to the current curriculum for each unit. While many traditional structures of CPE are utilized, creative students who wish to build their own educational experience are valued at Bronson. A collegial community with students is fostered, where play is taken seriously and serious work can be playful.
Typical Week
In the year-long residency, each CPE unit lasts approximately 10 weeks. Between each unit there is a training break of one to two weeks during which residents do not have educational responsibilities but are working full-time on their assigned units.
We generally have 5 CPE residents, who are responsible for carrying the On-Call hospital pager. They divide the on-call shifts equally between them. As a result, the on-call schedule for CPE residents runs in five week cycles:
Three of the weeks of the five week cycle consist of working 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and being on-call for 12 hours from 8 am to 8 pm during one of these days. During these three weeks students have the weekends off. Of their 44 hours each week, they can expect to spend approximately:
- 12 hours in seminars
- 9 hours in study
- 1 hour in individual supervision
- 20 hours in ministry throughout the hospital and on-call time
The other two weeks of the five-week cycle consist of working 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and being on-call for 12 hours from 8 am to 8 pm during one of these days. During these two weeks students have Fridays off and are on-call for 24 hours from Friday evening 8 pm to Saturday evening 8 pm or Saturday evening 8 pm to Sunday evening 8 pm. Of their 60 hours they can expect to spend approximately:
- 12 hours in seminars
- 5 hours in study time
- 1 hours in individual supervision
- 12 hours on units
- Plus on-call time
