Bronson Heart Month Events Focus on Women
January 30, 2013
February is National Heart Month. Bronson Healthcare is offering a variety of events and services in Kalamazoo to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it.
National Wear Red Day
Cardiovascular disease is the leading health threat for women in the U.S., yet the condition has a difficult time shaking its reputation as one primarily afflicting older men. Every minute a woman becomes a victim of heart disease, which claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined.
Women often experience different symptoms than men when experiencing a heart attack, such as unexplained anxiety, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, palpitations, cold sweat, paleness, stomachache or abdominal pain.
Both women and men should call 911 immediately if they or someone else experience mild discomfort or nagging ache in the center of the chest, discomfort in the neck, jaw, arm and/or back or shortness of breath and nausea.
WomenHeart Support Group
WomenHeart of Greater Kalamazoo will meet at the Bronson Athletic Club on February 27, from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. WomenHeart is a national coalition for women with heart disease. This support group meets monthly to provide heart health education for women and their families. For more information, contact Sherry Dedituis at WH-GtrKalamazoo@womenheart.org or (269) 372-3329, or contact Carrie Hamilton at (269) 377-0718 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Free Online Heart Screenings
People who complete an online, Women and Heart, health risk assessment in February will be entered to win a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Visitors to Bronson’s website, www.learnyourrisk.comcan receive a personal report showing their heart disease risk levels. The assessment is free, confidential and takes about ten minutes.
Heart Health Screens
Heart Health Screenings will be offered on February 6, from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
The twenty- minute test evaluates Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TC/HDL Ratio; Triglycerides; Blood Sugar; Blood Pressure; Pulse for rhythm and rate; Height; Weight; Body Mass Index; Waist; Hip and Hip Ratio. Screening also includes assessment for Metabolic Syndrome. Each screening includes an explanation of results, goal setting, encouragement and supporting information.
Heart Health Screens cost $35 and take place at Bronson HealthAnswers, located on Bronson Methodist Hospital’s South Campus first floor, adjacent to the pharmacy. Parking is available in the Vine Street Ramp. Call 341-6495 or e-mail email@example.com to schedule an appointment.
Heart CT Scans
Heart Scans are offered every Monday at Bronson Methodist Hospital. This painless CT scan detects calcium buildup in the arteries. Catching signs of heart disease early gives people time to seek treatment before feeling symptoms or experiencing a heart attack.
The Heart Scan costs $200 and is not currently covered by insurance. It includes all technical, medical and professional interpretation and a personalized report. Call (269) 34-HEART, or (269) 344-3278 for scheduling and information. The Bronson Heart Scan is offered at Bronson Outpatient Testing, located on Bronson Methodist Hospital's South Campus first floor, next to the main entrance. Parking is available in the Vine Street Ramp.
