Critical Care

Patients with life-threatening medical conditions are closely monitored in Bronson's intensive care units. We have the specialized staff and equipment needed to provide the highest levels of treatment.

These conditions often affect many areas of the body and can cause organs to stop working. Critical care patients often need multiple medicines and specialized equipment, such as ventilators to help with breathing.

Seriously ill patients get the best treatment when they are grouped together into specific areas of the hospital. Intensive care units (ICUs) have specialized equipment and specially trained caregivers. They also have a higher nurse-to-patient ratio than other hospital units.

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
We take a multidisciplinary approach to intensive care, with a team of specially trained nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and case managers. They work with doctors to provide 24-hour treatment when you need intensive care.

Patients in these units often have:

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding
  • Heart failure
  • Liver/renal failure
  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Respiratory failure
  • Sepsis

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
We provide innovative, around-the-clock care for patients who are recovering from surgery or have burns, head injuries, traumatic injuries, or stroke.

Our specially trained doctors and nurses provide 24-hour treatment for these patients in the SICU, where they can be closely monitored. This 20-bed unit has state-of-the-art equipment to support breathing and monitor heart, blood, and brain pressure.

SICU nurses are all registered nurses who have advanced training in critical care, with emphasis on traumatic and neurological injuries.

Located next to the Trauma and Emergency Center, the SICU provides:

  • Surgical Intensive Care
  • Trauma Care
  • Neuro-critical Care
  • Burn Critical Care

Trauma Care
Within the SICU there is an intensive care area just for trauma patients. Trauma patients stay in this unit from admission through discharge, no matter how minor or severe their injuries.  That's because traumatic injuries often affect many different body systems. The best care can be provided in a single location by doctors and nurses who work as a multidisciplinary team.

Visiting ICUs
For the safety of our patients, Bronson has special guidelines for visiting patients in intensive care units. Restrictions on flowers and gifts also apply. Please ask a unit staff member for more information.
