Heart Surgery

Bronson's cardiac surgery unit provides specialized, state-of-the-art care, with outcomes better than national standards. One reason is that you recover from your surgery in a private room, which promotes healing and reduces the risk of infection.

Bronson's Cardiac Surgery Unit is located adjacent to the cardiac operating rooms and cardiac catheterization labs. This allows better communication and faster transport for patients who need emergency surgery.

Services
Patients recover in the CSU immediately after many different heart procedures, including:

  • Aortic aneurysm repair
  • Cardiac reoperative procedures
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery, including traditional and beating-heart surgery
  • Left Ventricular Reconstruction (LVR) to reshape and restore the heart for heart failure patients
  • Selected pediatric surgeries
  • Valve surgery, including mitral valve repair and replacement of mitral and aortic valves surgery

Coronary Artery Bypass
A procedure that creates a detour around the blocked part of a coronary artery to restore the blood supply to the heart muscle. This includes traditional open heart and off-pump surgery. Off-pump is a procedure in which the surgeon can operate on your heart without the use of the heart-lung machine. Only hospitals with the most advanced facilities and the most experienced clinicians can perform this type of surgery. Off-pump surgery patients typically recover more quickly than traditional open heart surgery patients.

Heart Failure Surgery
Left Ventricular Reconstruction (LVR) is an advanced surgical technique that reshapes and restores a damaged heart chamber - or ventricle. Reshaping eases heart failure symptoms in patients because it helps the heart pump normally again.

Valve Surgery
Surgery to repair or replace diseased heart valves. This includes replacement or mitral and aortic valves and repair of mitral valves.

Atrial Fibrillation Surgery
A surgical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), or irregular heart rhythm, in which a surgeon uses a pen-like device or clamp during surgery to prevent the irregular electrical signals that cause AF and restore the normal heart rhythm.

Thoracic Procedures
Non-cardiac chest surgery including esophageal and lung surgery, pulmonary resections and thorascopic surgery.

After surgery, patients receive care in Bronson's dedicated Cardiac Surgery Unit and Cardiology Unit. We also offer home health care services to ease your transition from the hospital to your home.

Our Team
Our dedicated, five-bed Cardiac Surgery Unit (CSU) is staffed by nurses specially trained to care for cardiac surgery patients and their families.

After heart surgery, you and your family can depend on our discharge planners and cardiac surgery clinical nurse liaisons for help with planning for your needs when you go home.
