Expertise in Minimally Invasive Surgery
Our neurosurgeons use the most advanced, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques to treat brain tumors, vascular disorders, movement disorders, and spinal and peripheral nerve problems. MIS can be used in both routine and complex procedures. Minimally invasive is a term used to describe surgical techniques that require a few small incisions versus a large opening. A smaller incision area results in:

  • Less impact on healthy tissue
  • Less scarring
  • Less pain, and less need for pain medicine
  • Lower chance of infection
  • Shorter length of stay at the hospital
  • Shorter recovery time at home

Surgery for Brain Tumors
Bronson neurosurgeons treat benign and malignant brain tumors with the latest techniques in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. They have advanced training in such areas as:

  • Cranial and skull base surgery
  • Endoscopic surgery
  • Transsphenoidal surgery (surgery performed through the nostril)
  • Stereotactic neurosurgery (brain surgery guided by three-dimensional images from CT or MRI scans)

  • Acute spinal cord injury
  • Aneurysm/AVM treatment
  • Artificial disk replacement

Neuro Team Collaboration
Bronson neurosurgeons work with other providers and with patients and families to best meet each patient's individual needs. A central component of the Bronson neurosurgery program is a team approach to patient care that allows for multidisciplinary input from a broad array of services including neurology, neuro critical care, epileptology, physiatry, oncology, neuroradiology, orthopedics, chiropractic, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and more.

As a Level I Trauma Center, Bronson neurosurgeons are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for patient emergencies relating to brain trauma, spinal cord trauma and neurovascular trauma and disorders such as stroke, aneurysm, and a arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Level I is the highest ranking a trauma center can receive.

Our Team
Our neurosurgeons care for adults and children with disorders of the spine, brain, and peripheral nerves. We have the region's only neurosurgeon to have served a fellowship in both skull base and pediatric neurosurgery. Plus, Dr. Fabi is the only neurosurgeon in southwest Michigan who has performed deep brain stimulation treatment for certain movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease. In addition, we have specially trained neurosurgeons in minimally invasive spine surgery. They use the latest procedures to help patients recover faster.

Alain Fabi, MD is Administrative Director of Neurosurgery at Bronson and Bratislav Velimirovic, MD, PhD serves as Medical Directory of Neurosurgery at Bronson. For profiles of physicians specializing in neurology, neurosurgery and other related areas, visit our Find a Doctor section.
