Spine Services

Bronson Spine Services encompasses the full scope of spinal diseases, disorders and injuries, bringing together the expertise of specialists in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery.

Our physicians excel in the diagnosis and treatment of everything from simple conditions such as low back pain to more complex problems such as spine fractures.

Services
Bronson Spine Services offers:

  • Collaboration among neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and neuroradiologists, which ensures the most thorough assessment and treatment plan
  • An advanced interventional neuroradiology department
  • Eighteen state-of-the-art surgical suites, including special, "laminar flow" operating rooms. These high-tech rooms have their own specially filtered air supply, which can lower the risk for infection during surgery
  • The only state-of-the-art Endovascular Suite in southwest Michigan - diagnostics, procedures and surgery take place in the same room.
  • All-private inpatient rooms, which reduces infection risk
  • Four locations for rehabilitation

A referral from a primary care provider is required.

Technology
The list of surgeries that can be performed using minimally invasive spine technologies is now increasing to include decompressive discectomy, laminectomy, fusions, spinal cord stimulator insertion and kyphoplasty. Minimally invasive surgery offers many benefits, such as:

  • Smaller incision
  • Less pain
  • Decreased hospital stay
  • Shorter rehabilitation
  • Improved functional outcome

The Bronson Spine Services team uses a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and treat acute, recurring, and chronic neck and back pain.

Causes of Back Pain
The most common causes of back pain are:

  • A strain of the:
    • Muscles
    • Ligaments
    • Facet joints (protrusions on the back of each vertebrae)
    • Sacroiliac joints (joints between the spine and pelvis)
    • Coccyx (tailbone)
  • Pressure on nerve roots in the spinal canal caused by:
    • Herniated disc
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis (degeneration or "slipping" of the vertebrae)
    • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
    • Spinal deformity
    • Compression fracture
  • Fracture of the vertebrae caused by a significant force

Quality
Bronson uses quality data from national research companies and national benchmark (best practice) databases to continuously improve our spine program. HealthGrades® is a national organization that uses Medicare data to rate how well hospitals perform specific procedures.

  • HealthGrades® rated Bronson the best hospital in southwest Michigan for spine surgery.
  • Bronson also received the highest rating (five stars) for back and neck surgery with spinal fusion. 2007 HealthGrades®
