Knit Baby Hat Pattern
  • Newborn: use 4-ply yarn, #5 and #8 double pointed needles
  • Preemie: use 3-ply yarn, #4 and #7 double pointed needles.
  1. Cast on 16 stitches loosely on each of 3 needles of the smaller size.
  2. Knit five rounds of K1, P1 ribbing.
  3. (If desired, you may do 10 or 12 rounds for a turned back cuff).
  4. Change to larger needles.
  5. Knit stockinette for 18 rounds.
  6. Next round, K2, K2 to the end (eight stitches per needle).
  7. The next five rounds can be done in ribbing (K1, P1), seed stitch, or stockinette.
  8. Last round K2, K2 to the end (four stitches per needle).
  9. Cut yarn leaving 18 inch length.
  10. Thread on yarn needle and pull through remaining stitches. (do this twice--first on the needles and then as you remove the stitches from the needles.)
  11. Weave in the yarn ends.
  12. Trim top as desired - bow, pompom, tassel, ribbon or leave plain.
