Knit Baby Hat Pattern
- Newborn: use 4-ply yarn, #5 and #8 double pointed needles
- Preemie: use 3-ply yarn, #4 and #7 double pointed needles.
- Cast on 16 stitches loosely on each of 3 needles of the smaller size.
- Knit five rounds of K1, P1 ribbing.
- (If desired, you may do 10 or 12 rounds for a turned back cuff).
- Change to larger needles.
- Knit stockinette for 18 rounds.
- Next round, K2, K2 to the end (eight stitches per needle).
- The next five rounds can be done in ribbing (K1, P1), seed stitch, or stockinette.
- Last round K2, K2 to the end (four stitches per needle).
- Cut yarn leaving 18 inch length.
- Thread on yarn needle and pull through remaining stitches. (do this twice--first on the needles and then as you remove the stitches from the needles.)
- Weave in the yarn ends.
- Trim top as desired - bow, pompom, tassel, ribbon or leave plain.
