Bronson Again Recognized for Excellence in Stroke Care

March 06, 2008

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Bronson Methodist Hospital is one of only 68 hospitals in the nation designated as a Stroke Center of Excellence by NeuStrategy. Bronson was recognized for the quality of its clinical programs, medical staff, and education and outreach for stroke care.

This designation comes from a first-ever comprehensive stroke industry survey, fielded in summer 2007. NeuStrategy is an organization that provides strategic, financial and operational support to health systems, physician practices and industry vendors. It represents findings from those select hospitals in the United States that are certified primary stroke centers and those working toward stroke program certification.

The survey measures four key components of stroke center excellence including programs, staff, facility and technology, and business.

“One example of how our stroke program impacts the quality of stroke care to help contribute to this designation is our Stroke Call Down process,” said Dean Kindler, Bronson medical director, adult neurology and stroke services. This collaborative effort between our Acute Stroke Intervention Team, Emergency Department and other specialties provides prompt evaluation and treatment of stroke inpatients. The process begins before patients come through our doors.”

The Bronson neurosciences team is providing more specialists and treatment options for its patients - including southwest Michigan’s only board-certified vascular neurologist, neurointensivist, fellowship-trained movement disorder neurologist, epileptologist, and a pediatric fellowship-trained neurosurgeon; a pediatric neurology program; and a new, dedicated Neurovascular Unit for patients with neurovascular issues such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, aneurysms, seizure disorders, CNS tumors and related disorders.

According to a recent survey by Professional Research Consultants, Inc., Kalamazoo County residents prefer Bronson for head injury and stroke care. Bronson has also been a Joint Commission-accredited Primary Stroke Center since 2005.
