Bronson Advanced Radiology Services Opens New Eco- Friendly Building June 23
June 10, 2008
Bronson Advanced Radiology Services (BARS), located at 524 S. Park in downtown Kalamazoo, is set to open its new $6.8 million facility on June 23, 2008. The nearly 30,000 square foot facility was constructed according to LEED-certification standards to create a more efficient, eco-friendly building. It replaces the current building on that site, originally a church, which has been renovated many times over the years to accommodate the growing radiology service.
Bronson Healthcare Group and Advanced Radiology Services, PC-Kalamazoo Division, established Bronson Advanced Radiology Services as a joint venture in 2004. The physician group, which traces its roots to 1897, has occupied the current facility since 1976. With the opening of its new facility, BARS is adding two new diagnostic services for patients: nuclear medicine testing and a lab draw station. Other diagnostic services provided include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), mammography, bone densitometry (DEXA), ultrasound, and general diagnostic X-ray. In addition to BARS, the 23 radiologists on staff interpret medical images at all Bronson diagnostic testing sites, and other healthcare locations throughout southwest Michigan. They perform thousands of procedures within their respective subspecialties each year.
Eduardo Crotte, M.D., medical director for BARS, says, “We are extremely pleased to be able to enhance services for our patients while maintaining our downtown location and doing our part to help the environment. With more than a century of service here, we share Bronson’s dedication for reinvesting in the heart of our community.”
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. The new BARS facility is just the latest in Bronson’s green efforts, dating back to 1996 (see fact sheet attached). LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:
Many construction, architectural and sustainable design features were incorporated in the BARS facility to prevent pollution, conserve energy and promote recycling. The new facility is also more efficient due to improved service adjacencies and flow within the building, as well as the wireless technology incorporated for enhanced communication.
The construction management company for the project is CSM Group of Kalamazoo and the architect is Diekema Hamann Architecture + Engineering, Kalamazoo.
According to Vicki Nelson, a senior principal and board certified specialist in healthcare architecture for Diekema Hamann, “Everyone on our staff is LEED-accredited, so we appreciate Bronson’s and Advanced Radiology Services’ commitment to create an environmentally friendly building. The design and materials used in construction are very important in green efforts for LEED certification. However, equally important is the owners’ commitment to maintain the facility in a manner that is healthy for occupants as well as the environment.”
Some of the features of the BARS facility that contribute to LEED-certification include:
Over the next two months, the current BARS building will be razed and many materials will be recycled as space is created for a new patient parking lot. Final site work and landscaping will be completed in August. Until that time, BARS patients will continue to access parking from Walnut Street and will be directed to use a temporary entrance along the south side of the new building. In addition, a greeter will be available in the parking lot during this time to help patients access the new building.
