A Community of Support: One Mom's Experience with Centering Pregnancy at Bronson

Centering Pregnancy has been an incredible experience. This is my fourth pregnancy, and I had never done Centering before. Looking back, I would have done it for my first, my second and my third pregnancies. It's just so informative. You think you know everything, but there's always something new to learn. Being in a group like this makes you feel more prepared and ready to give birth. You know what to expect, and that reassurance is invaluable.

For me, one of the best parts has been connecting with first-time moms. Even though I'm young, I have more experience, and hearing their thoughts makes me feel less alone. I remember thinking the same things during my first pregnancy and feeling alone in those thoughts and experiences. But in centering, you realize you're never alone.

I also love how they take care of you. They check your blood pressure, track your weight and are always monitoring your baby's growth. One time, they couldn't find my baby's heartbeat right away. I was worried, but they immediately arranged an ultrasound. That extra layer of security and care made all the difference. Centering is personal and informative and really gives you the time and space to learn about your baby while growing alongside other moms. It’s an experience that makes me feel wholly supported and secure.

To other moms, no matter who you are or what your background is, my advice is to be honest with yourself. If you're struggling, speak up. Whether it's postpartum concerns, anxiety, or the feeling that something is wrong - talk to someone. Talk not only to your OB/GYN, but your primary care doctor and your support system. It’s easy to think, ‘I’ll just get through it,’ but recognizing when you need help and advocating for yourself is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your baby.

Especially for Black moms, it’s crucial to use your voice. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t take no for an answer. Get a second opinion, a third, however many you need to feel heard. You know your body and your baby better than anyone. There are doctors out there who will listen to you - you just have to find them. And Bronson’s Centering Pregnancy program has helped me feel even more confident in advocating for myself and my baby. They listen. They take our concerns seriously.

Being a Black mother is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. But I also know that in our community, not everything gets talked about. I’ve been fortunate to connect with doctors and community programs early on, and I want other moms to know they don’t have to feel silenced or ashamed. Someone will listen. I’ve learned to use my voice not just for my kids but for myself. Becoming a mom shaped me into the woman I am today—stronger, more confident and ready to advocate.

Centering Pregnancy has been a huge part of that journey. It’s not just about the clinical side of medical care—it’s about being seen, heard and supported. That’s something every mom deserves.
