A true advocate for her patients

We recently had a long-term patient on the BBC Neurovascular/C2 unit, and Lindsey, an Acute Care Assistant, was amazing.

The patient was on the unit for several months. During the patients' stay, several of our staff members learned what the patient liked/disliked and was able to establish a routine. Lindsey in particular built trust with the patient and was a key component to establishing cooperation with nursing staff. Lindsey was also someone we called on when the patient started to get upset or wouldn’t take the prescribed medications. Sometimes just her talking with the patient for a few minutes resulted in a positive outcome.

Being here long-term resulted in many issues with the patients' diet and what they would eat. The patient was skipping many meals because he/she was tired of the same foods night after night. Lindsey started going to the cafeteria every night to get a meal off the hot bar that she knew they would enjoy, and was also part of their approved diet. When Lindsey switched shifts, she advocated for the Food Services team to pick food items off the hot bar for this patients' meals instead of the regular patient menu. This resulted in a much happier patient.

When we were able to discharge the patient, case management asked Lindsey to provide a list of likes and dislikes as well as an insight into this patients' routine, resulting in a smooth transition from our facility to the new care facility. Lindsey provided excellent care and advocated for this patient to improve a lengthy stay with us.
