I can’t imagine another culture I would want to work in
I have been a nurse on the Bronson Methodist Hospital general surgery unit for more than 28 years. I started in a night shift role, then moved on to a charge nurse position, followed by an admissions role, and now I am a unit coordinator. Over the years I also did a lot of precepting, helping onboard and train our newer nurses. What I love most about my current role as a unit coordinator is that I am able to work at the bedside with patients while also mentoring staff. There’s so much variety in my role and I am learning something new every day, even though I have been on this unit for nearly three decades.
Many new nurses start their career on a med/surg unit – and at Bronson, there is so much variety and so much to learn! On the general surgery unit in particular, our nurses get so much experience working with a vast array of diagnosis – from medical cases to surgical cases, we see it all. This provides a great launching pad for our nurses when they are ready to take the next step in their career. In my time on this unit, I have seen nurses make such a positive impact with our patients – then recognize their desire to grow and try something new. These nurses have gained such a strong nursing foundation and are equipped with so many skills that they are able to head off to more advanced units – be that the ICU, ED or another surgery role (PACU, pre-/post-op, etc.) – and make a tremendous impact there, too.
Something that makes me incredibly proud to be a nurse at Bronson Methodist Hospital is that we recently received our fourth Magnet designation. This is a huge deal, and a reflection of our culture. Here, nurses at the bedside have a voice in our practice. We have been able to initiate and bring upon real change within the hospital. Nurses are sitting at tables where decisions are made. Communication between nursing leaders, physicians and the healthcare team as a whole is valued. Magnet is not just a designation – it represents how we practice.
Whether you are a new nurse or an expert nurse who is simply looking for a new role, I urge you to consider Bronson. At the end of the day, you can do your craft and take your talent anywhere because it lives within you. But you really want to consider the culture of an organization. It is important to be somewhere that you can thrive and use all of your talents. You want to look for teamwork, for leaders who support you, for a place where you have a voice and people are listening, for a place that offers opportunities to grow. All of this wrapped together is what you will find at Bronson.
