Ben Guerra, BSN, RN, PMGT-BC, is the recipient of the 2025 Nursing Excellence Award: Impact

An impactful nurse is one who positively influences nursing practice, focuses on process improvement to strengthen patient outcomes, and sets an example of excellence for the nursing profession itself. This is Benjamin Guerra.

Ben exemplifies high standards of clinical nursing practice. He regularly receives recognition from patients and families for the exceptional care he provides. Ben is an invaluable team player and fosters a collaborative environment within the department.

Ben has demonstrated exceptional commitment through active participation in numerous workgroups and committees, working to enhance patient care and safety. He is an active member of his unit-based council, supporting efforts to improve patient outcomes as well as encouraging other nurses in the department to be involved in initiatives. He also serves as the committee chair for the Pediatric Pain Management Committee, advocating for accurate pain assessment, management, and nursing knowledge about treatment options and new/best practices for pediatric patients. More recently, he has worked to assure his coworkers were educated and knowledgeable about new policy updates regarding PCA pump recommendations and monitoring to prevent oversedation. Due to his passion for pain management, Ben recently took the initiative to validate his knowledge and expertise in the area by becoming a certified Pain Management nurse.

Ben is also actively involved in multiple Nursing Shared Leadership committees. In Policy committee, he provides important pediatric perspective when discussing policies, guidelines, and procedures. In Innovations, he took the initiative to create a new standard work document for blood culture collection to share with nurses across the system as a result of the groups work in analyzing data, interdisciplinary collaboration, and nursing input on blood culture contamination rates and best practices. He is also an active member of the Professional Growth Council, advocating for the retention, recognition, and professional growth of our nurses. In his own professional growth journey, Ben applied for the Nursing Professional Advancement Ladder (NPAL) and in doing so, achieved not just a Level 2, but a Level 3. More recently, Ben also became the co-chair of our Divisional Nursing Council, proving his commitment to amplifying the nursing voice.

In addition, Ben goes above-and-beyond in showcasing his passion for the nursing profession in what he does outside of Bronson. Last summer, he volunteered in a clinic in a rural area of Zambia, assisting with physical assessments, vital signs, blood sugar checks, providing medications/ supplements, etc. to approximately 400 patients. He also works as a clinical instructor to an area university nursing program, providing instruction and expertise to the students he oversees. In an effort to contribute to team cohesion and morale, Ben also volunteers as the coach of the pediatric department’s softball and kickball teams.

Ben’s unwavering dedication, innovative spirit, and passion for providing exceptional patient care truly make an impact that deserves recognition.
