I have completed 61 marathons in 26 different states

Approximately 30 years ago Dr. Mark Russell performed an operation on my lower back. A laminectomy L5-S1. After the procedure he told me that I could do anything that I wanted with the caveat that “if it bothers you don’t do it.”

I am now 64 years old and the operation and after care was so excellent that there has been absolutely nothing that I have been unable to do. I have completed 61 marathons in 26 different states. Including 12 Ironman triathlons, a 50-mile run and numerous other runs.

This also includes parachuting out of an airplane twice, scuba diving, 24-hour challenge bike rides, and currently attempting to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail having completed about 1000 miles on it carrying a 30+ pound backpack and sleeping in a tent.

I have had 30 great years that I give him so very much credit for as before this surgery it was all I could do to get out of bed to go to the bathroom.
