I Felt at Total Peace and I Knew I was in Good Hands

Three weeks after retiring at the age of 65, I was diagnosed with breast cancer: ductal carcinoma in situ, high nuclear grade, stage 0. The care that I received while going through the process of deciding which route to take was confusing at first. Dr. Mika Reschke and her team welcomed my questions and provided answers that I could understand. If I needed further clarification, it was given without hesitation.

During a consultation with Dr. Reschke, she shared with me her unique and awesome bedside manner. She asked me to think of, and share with her, a song or music that makes me happy. She told me that before my lumpectomy surgery, and while I was being put to sleep, she would softly play my choice of music to help me relax. Later, I had been listening to Christian music at home and the song How Great Thou Art came on - the Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill rendition. THAT was my song! I went into my Bronson MyChart portal and let Dr. Reschke know the song that I had chosen.

Of course, the day of surgery was a bit nerve-wracking for me and my husband. When I was all prepped for surgery and was wheeled into the surgical room, I could hear my song playing in the background and then I noticed Dr. Reschke dressed in full surgical attire behind her face mask. She was joined by her team of wonderful medical professionals who handled me very gently. To my delight, not only could I hear Dr. Reschke singing to my comfort song, but at least three or four others in the room were either softly singing or humming! I felt at total peace as I dozed off and KNEW I was in good hands. May God bless you all for this awesome experience.
