“I Don’t See It as a Limitation”: Ricky Robbins on Disability, Pride and Empowerment

Ricky Robbins, a financial navigator at the Bronson Cancer Center, smiles for the camera in front of a green wall.

My name is Ricky Robbins. I work as a financial navigator at the Bronson Cancer Center in Kalamazoo. I joined capABLE, Bronson’s disability employee resource group (ERG) because I wanted to grow as a leader and make a real difference here. Being part of this group, currently in the role of co-chair, has helped me do that and connect with others who care about celebrating what makes each of us unique.

Living and working with a disability has come with challenges, but Bronson has supported me every step of the way. In the different jobs I’ve had here, there were times I needed help with certain tasks. Bronson made sure I had the tools and support I needed to do my job well. If I needed time off because of my disability, my leaders were always understanding and willing to help.

What I want people to know about living with a disability is that it’s something to be proud of.  I don’t see my disability as a limitation. It’s part of who I am and a source of strength. It has helped me grow, keep moving forward and show what I’m capable of.

Through my work with capABLE, I want to help others see that our differences should be celebrated. You don’t have to be ashamed of who you are. Everything that makes you “you” is something to be proud of.

I am grateful that Bronson is helping to shine a light on Disability Pride Month. It’s so important to me because it is a time to shine a light on the talents, experiences and voices of people with disabilities. It reminds us that everyone deserves to feel included and valued. Community doesn’t just happen, it’s something we all help create. At Bronson, I see that happening. We work hard to create a positive, welcoming place where everyone belongs – whether that is through the work we do or the care our patients receive. I’m proud to be part of it.
