Jody is the embodiment of a present, powerful and transformational leader

Photo of Jody accepting her Nurse Leadership Award.Jody has truly embraced her leadership role as Unit Coordinator for NCCU at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She works hard to keep her team motivated and engaged while ensuring that every member of the team feels supported. She acknowledges her staff’s unique abilities and the perspectives they bring to the unit. Jody leads our NCCU Facebook group and puts in extra effort to make sure that every staff member’s birthday is celebrated. She takes the time to get to know her whole team on a personal level and ensures that they know they can go to her with any concerns.

Jody is profoundly knowledgeable and shares that with her staff to ensure that our patients are getting the highest quality care possible. As the night shift Unit Coordinator, she coaches many new nurses. She fosters a safe and supportive environment, taking them under her wing to work through difficult scenarios such as their first emergent intubation after orientation. She has helped form interdepartmental relationships, especially with the MICU. She even helped orient their new Unit Coordinator and has created a valued partnership between the two units. She goes above and beyond by helping her staff become autonomous nurses and her lead-by-example philosophy has been recognized and praised by house managers, unit leaders and providers.

She often takes the lead at team huddles, where she communicates important changes in policies and incorporates reminders about “back to basics” initiatives. Staff go to her as a coach and policy guru. You can always catch Jody logged in to daytime meetings from home, ready to share her ideas and findings from the nightshift perspective. She is an expert in all things Neuro ICU nursing and continuously fosters brainstorming amongst the nurses and providers to find innovative solutions for process improvements. This constant strive for excellence was reflected in our recent Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center visit, which resulted in no citations.

Jody has also taken on the added responsibility of running after-hours intermittent dialysis coverage. She traveled to Columbus, Ohio to attend the two-day Tablo Coordinator Course and brought back a wealth of knowledge. Additionally, she has supported sending several members of the NCCU team to the Annual Stroke Symposium in Grand Rapids, which she has also attended herself. If all of that wasn’t enough, Jody helped create a new policy and education for the administration of teclistimab, a new FDA-approved treatment for multiple myeloma. Her efforts, paired with her attention to detail, allowed the staff to safely and confidently care for patients undergoing this treatment.

Jody is the embodiment of what it means to be a present, powerful and transformational leader. She has helped the NCCU staff in immeasurable ways by sharing her dedication to and love of nursing. We are truly proud and thankful to have Jody as our Unit Coordinator and to be a part of her team.
