Justin exemplifies 'respect' as a nurse
Justin Boven, RN, is the recipient of the 2025 Nursing Excellence Award: Respect
Justin was my 12-day-old granddaughter's night nurse during a stressful, unexpected admission to the hospital with an apparent respiratory infection and possible sepsis. His high level of awareness was very apparent in the respectful, kind care he provided throughout his 12-hour shift. He successfully re-established trust with the care team after a [previous bad healthcare experience]. Justin listened to every concern and went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure our comfort, that we were well informed, and that we got rest.
An example of his thoughtfulness includes going from the pediatric unit to the trauma care unit to borrow a floor fan when my daughter mentioned it was difficult to sleep without her fan from home, as she likes the white noise. He also brought a recliner/sleeper into the room and extra blankets and pillows so my son-in-law and I both had a place to lie down. Justin has stealthy skills like a ghost in entering and exiting a dark room to monitor the patient, restock, give IV medication, change and weigh a diaper, etc. without disturbing anyone. He was very patient in working around the breast pump, feeding tube, continuous pulse ox, IV pump, isolete, and still accommodating us and making family feel welcome and important as partners in the baby's care. He offered to put a pot of coffee on in the morning for us and introduced the oncoming nurse during a bedside handoff in the morning. We also had a very meaningful, honest conversation with him about our spiritual beliefs and greatly appreciated his genuine acceptance. He really restored my faith in the excellence of nursing care that has earned Bronson Magnet recognition. Justin exemplifies "Respect" and is deserving of this award and honor.
