Liz's Story: Turning Grief into Gold

A Testimonial for Bronson Mothers' Milk Bank's 20th Anniversary

On a quiet December morning in 2025, Liz walked through the doors of Bronson Mothers' Milk Bank carrying something irreplaceable: the last physical connection she had to her daughter, Ellie. A few small ounces of breastmilk. Liquid gold, as she calls it. Proof that her body had loved, prepared and nourished, even after Ellie was gone.

She told herself she would drop it off and leave quickly. She knew how fragile she was.

But grief, it turns out, does not move on a schedule. And neither does grace.

“She treated my milk like the treasure it was.”

That is how Liz described the moment Lizzie, a Milk Bank team member, received Ellie's donation. There was no rush, no clinical detachment. She thanked Liz again and again. She let Liz place the milk into the freezer herself — one last act of mothering and sense of control at a time where so much had been taken away.

Then she hugged her.

"Until my body emptied itself of tears and was forced to breathe again."

That is the kind of care that does not appear in a clinical protocol. It is the kind of care that is built over years and over a culture of compassion that has defined Bronson Mothers' Milk Bank since its founding in 2006.

Twenty Years of Turning Loss into Life

This year, Bronson Mothers' Milk Bank celebrates its 20th anniversary. That is two decades of screening, collecting, processing and distributing donated breast milk to premature and critically ill newborns not only in Bronson's own Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, but to hospitals and families across the nation.

For many of those 20 years, donors like Liz have walked through the milk bank doors carrying stories that words can barely hold. Mothers who delivered early. Mothers who came home without their babies. Mothers who, in the midst of unimaginable grief, made the extraordinary decision to give what their bodies had prepared, so that another child might live, grow and thrive.

Breast milk is not simply food. For a premature or critically ill infant, it is protection. It is easier to digest than formula, nutrient-dense and clinically proven to help fragile babies fight infection, develop properly and build strength in those critical early days of life. As an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), Bronson ensures that every donation is carefully screened and processed to the highest standards, so that it reaches the babies who need it most.

Part of Something Larger: 125 Years of Bronson Care

Liz's story does not exist in isolation. It is one thread in a tapestry that Bronson Healthcare has been weaving for 125 years.

Since 1900, Bronson has stood as a cornerstone of care for the people of southwest Michigan and beyond — growing, evolving and deepening its commitment to the communities it serves. The opening of the Mothers' Milk Bank in 2006 was itself an expression of that commitment: a decision to go beyond the expected, to ask “what more can we do?” – and take action.

125 years of healing. 20 years of liquid gold. And one mother named Liz, who walked in on a December morning carrying everything she had left of her daughter. And in giving it away, she gave Ellie a way to live on.
