With the help of Angelique and Susan, we were able to protect 80 of our most vulnerable patients
In the fall of 2023, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) endorsed Beyfortus - a pediatric monoclonal antibody that protects against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Unfortunately, available supply from the manufacturer did not meet the nationwide demand. Therefore, Beyfortus was only made available to the highest-need patients based on scarce allocation criteria. This meant that the criteria for patients qualified for Beyfortus changed on an ongoing basis.
Two of our nurses at Bronson Rambling Road Pediatrics - Angelique Drijkoningen-Elkins, RN, and Susan Hubbard, RN - were instrumental in keeping up on the criteria, collaborating with providers and clinical staff to determine which patients currently qualified, educating parents, scheduling appointments, collaborating with the clinical staff to administer the injection, and maintaining our inventory. Through this coordinated effort, Bronson Rambling Road Pediatrics was able to provide injections to eighty of our most vulnerable pediatric patients, keeping them safe from RSV.
