The Little Things That Mean Everything

Nicole is a dedicated bedside nurse in the medical intensive care unit whose quiet leadership and genuine compassion set a high standard for everyone around her. As both a preceptor and a mentor to student externs, Nicole not only teaches skills but models the kind of thoughtful, team-centered nursing that lifts the entire unit. She is one of those coworkers who is always there before you even ask. Whether it's answering a call light, jumping in for a bed change, or helping with a turn, Nicole is the first to offer her help without hesitation and without complaint. Her reliability and positivity make her a go-to person on the unit. Nicole's kindness and generosity extend far beyond her clinical tasks. She consistently goes out of her way to celebrate others. This includes organizing baby or bridal showers, bringing in cakes or cookies for daisy awards on the unit, and helping to make sure our team feels celebrated. She leads our staff retention and recognition committee, helping to shape the culture of our unit through meaningful acts of support.
What makes Nicole especially remarkable is her ability to truly connect with patients and their loved ones. She sees them as whole people, not just diagnoses or room numbers. She takes the time to do little things that mean everything. Some examples include bringing in balloons and cards for patient birthdays, brushing and braiding a woman's hair to preserve her dignity after a long ICU stay, and bringing in home supplies to give manicures to patients who clearly take pride in their appearance. These acts aren't just thoughtful, they're healing.
Nicole embodies the kind of nurse everyone hopes to have at the bedside: skilled, compassionate, generous, and deeply human. Her actions may sems small in the moment, but they leave a lasting impact on patients, loved ones, and coworkers alike.
