Due to pregnancy complications, Raelyn Gentile of St. Joseph, was admitted to Bronson Methodist Hospital prior to giving birth. At 29 weeks along she had to have an emergency c-section. “We didn’t have time to think about it. The doctors came in and told me what was about to happen.”
After twins Miles and Brooks were born, Raelyn and her husband, Derrick, were very overwhelmed. Their boys were in Bronson Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, receiving around-the-clock care. “Brooks was given only a 50% chance of survival. He was born under a pound,” says Raelyn.
“They are such fighters. The doctors and nurses have been great helping us through this emotional roller coaster. They hold us up when we need it and let us break down when we need to. We are blessed to be here. We know we are exactly where we need to be right now for them to get the best care."
Much of the equipment used to care for the boys, including a high frequency jet ventilator, c-pap machines, and NICU isolettes are supported through generous donors to Bronson Health Foundation. Support services like a NICU parent liaison, milestone celebrations, music therapy and art therapy are also funded by gifts to the Foundation. The Gentiles say they are forever grateful to donors. “It means more than they’ll ever know. That people are willing to donate, time, money, and energy to focus on these little babies they don’t know and to save their lives is incredible. It just restores your faith humanity that they are willing to donate for these little ones.”
