When Should You Get a Mammogram?

You should get a mammogram if you:

  • Are 40 years old or older
  • Feel a lump in your breast
  • Have breast thickening or swelling, dimpling, distortion, breast or nipple pain, or skin irritation

Your doctor may recommend earlier and/or more frequent mammograms based on your risk factors and family history.

The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chance of survival. The American Cancer Society recommends screening mammograms for women starting in their 40s.
