Better babysitters today make better parents tomorrow. Designed by a pediatrician, this two-day class teaches students in grades 6-8 (must have completed 5th grade) to be safe when they're home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting.  Students learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who's choking, and helpful information like what to do if there is severe weather.  The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises.  Students even get to use manikins to practice CPR and choking rescue!

Cost will be $100 for this two-day comprehensive class and payment is required at time of sign-up.  If cancelation does occur due to weather, or illness (or other reasons) refunds will be issued promptly.

Generally, the parent does not stay during the class time, but if there is an extenuating circumstance that we should be aware of please notify Carolyn Call, RN at 269.330.0001 so we can plan accordingly for seating and other considerations. Drop off and pickup by a parent or guardian (or other person that is specified by the parent) will be at 8:45am and 2:30pm each class day.  We also ask that a bagged lunch and water bottle be packed for your child each day.

Participants receive a certificate of completion.

Safe Sitter® Course Content:

  • Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
  • Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
  • First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.
  • Life & Business Skills: The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.

The class will be held in the basement of the Bronson Gilmore Center for Health Education
