Profile

Dr. Nicolina Smith chose a career in maternal-fetal medicine because of her passion for supporting birthing persons through high-risk pregnancies and addressing the urgent issue of maternal mortality in the United States. This specialty allows her to provide critical care during some of the most vulnerable moments in a patient’s life while also advocating for systemic change. Dr. Smith’s primary goal is to empower women, reduce disparities and contribute to improving maternal health outcomes on both an individual and national level. It was because of her mother that Dr. Smith chose her career in healthcare. As a single parent without a formal education, Dr. Smith’s mother worked hard to raise three children and provide for her family. Her resilience, determination and compassion instilled in Dr. Smith a strong commitment to helping others. Dr. Smith’s mother is the foundation of her desire to serve with empathy.

Dr. Smith has an interest in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and sleep disorders in pregnancy and is particularly passionate about exploring how these conditions impact maternal and fetal outcomes. What excites her about coming to work each day is the constant opportunity to learn and grow. Each patient presents unique challenges and needs, and she finds fulfillment in applying expertise and evidence to provide the best possible care. Dr. Smith finds it deeply rewarding to support families during such an important time in their lives.

Through Dr. Smith’s church, she engages in extensive outreach efforts to support and uplift her community. In her free time, Dr. Smith enjoys exploring different parks with her family and spending relaxing days at the beach.
