February Is American Heart Month: Prioritize Your Health

Heart disease remains a leading cause of health issues in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, more than 805,000 people in the U.S. experience a heart attack each year and for 600,000 of them, it is their first. This February, in honor of American Heart Month, we are raising awareness about heart health and helping people of all ages take steps toward healthier, longer lives.

Why Heart Health Matters

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy for health to take a back seat as we juggle work, family and endless responsibilities. Nearly half of U.S. adults live with some form of heart disease, highlighting the importance of prioritizing heart care.

The good news is that small, consistent changes in your daily routines can significantly reduce your risk. By managing stress, staying active and eating a balanced diet, you can keep your heart strong and healthy.

Tips to Manage Stress for Better Heart Health

  • Unwind with activities you love, such as gardening, reading or painting.
  • Connect with others by building supportive relationships within your community, family or faith-based organizations.
  • Limit exposure to stressful news and take regular breaks.
  • Talk to a healthcare professional for stress management resources.

Healthy Habits to Protect Your Heart

  • Choose heart-healthy meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
  • Stay active with regular physical activity like walking or cycling.
  • Get 7–9 hours of sleep each night.
  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol consumption.
  • Practice relaxation techniques such as stretching, mindfulness or deep breathing.

Know Your Risk for Heart Disease

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. If you are over 35 and have any of the following risk factors, consider scheduling a heart screening:

  • Family history of heart disease
  • High blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking history
  • Previous heart attack
