Bedtime Routines for Kids: Tips for Better Sleep

Sometimes it is hard to maintain routines at home, especially at bedtime. And yet, it is important to maintain this routine as much as possible to get the proper amount and quality of sleep so your child has the right amount of energy for the next day.
How Much Sleep Does Your Child Need?
In general, a one -year -old needs about 12 hours of sleep. A five - year -old needs about 11 hours, a 10-year -old about 10 hours, and a 15 -year -old about eight hours. Here are some tips from AAP ’s Healthy Children website for implementing a healthy sleep routine:
Healthy Bedtime Routine Tips for Children
Brush Teeth Before Bed
It’s a good idea to brush teeth before bedtime so there is no food in the mouth that may promote cavities in the middle of the night.
Bath Time as a Bedtime Signal
This is a good way for your child to start their “spa” moment. It is a soothing, hygienic and decisive way of separating the evening’s eating activities from sleeping. They can relax, play with toys one last time, or they may prefer to just talk with you.
Read Together Before Bed
Reading can serve as the perfect cue that it ’s time to cuddle up and go to sleep. Our minds tend to get tired and sleepy when we read before bedtime. This will turn out to be a great, lifelong habit.
Comfort Items Can Help Kids Sleep
It's OK to let your child sleep with a teddy bear, special blanket or some other favorite toy. These often help children fall asleep—especially if they wake up during the night. Make sure the object is safe. Look for ribbons, buttons or other parts that may be choking hazards. Stuffing or pellets inside stuffed toys can also be dangerous.
