Supporting Black Maternal Mental Health at Bronson
Black Maternal Health Week was founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to deepen the national conversation about Black maternal health in the United States. Bronson team members, in collaboration with Cradle Kalamazoo, are working to raise awareness of the disparities Black women experience before, during and after pregnancy.
In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, the care teams at Bronson Birthplace and Community Health Advancement are raising awareness of these disparate outcomes, sharing local resources and highlighting efforts to improve outcomes for Black mothers and birthing people who trust us for their care.
Addressing the Root Causes of Maternal Mental Disparate Outcomes
Black mothers and birthing individuals face maternal mental health (MMH) conditions, such as anxiety, depression and PTSD, at nearly twice the average rate, with 40% affected. This disparity is deeply rooted in systemic issues, including healthcare mistrust, fear of child protective services and logistical barriers. By sharing resources and advocating for equitable care, Bronson is committed to supporting the mental and physical well-being of Black mothers, parents and their babies.
Why Are Black Women and Women of Color at Higher Risk?
Several factors contribute to why Black mothers and birthing individuals are more likely to experience MMH conditions compared to their white counterparts including systemic racism, distrust of the healthcare system, screening biases and more.
What is Being Done to Help New Moms and Birthing Individuals in Our Community?
