Bronson Battle Creek Hospital: 15 Years of Care and Commitment

As seen in the “Remembered” issue of Scene Magazine, published May 2026.
Introduction
Fifteen years ago, Bronson Healthcare joined the Battle Creek community by acquiring the Battle Creek Health System. That move brought more than buildings and equipment—it brought a promise to provide great care for generations to come.
This year, we’re celebrating this milestone and looking back on how that promise has become a reality. Our 15th anniversary happens at the same time as Bronson Healthcare’s 125th year of service to the southwest Michigan region. We have learned one big truth over the years: when we work together, we succeed.
Like a symphony, our strength comes from teamwork. For 15 years, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital has added its own voice to Bronson’s history, delivering advanced medicine with a personal touch.
This anniversary also honors our vow to keep care local. Through strategic investment and a commitment to safety, we continue to strengthen Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and the entire Bronson Healthcare system.
"When Bronson committed to Battle Creek 15 years ago, we prioritized building a healthcare system rooted in trust," said Joe du Lac, Chief Operating Officer at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. "There was a clear understanding that collaboration would be essential to becoming a vital part of the area's social fabric. Every award, every advancement in technology is driven by our commitment to advance community health. Above all, we're more than healthcare providers and employees, we're your friends and neighbors."
Excellence is at the Heart of Everything We Do
Great care has a rhythm. You can find it in every medical advancement and every comforting touch. At Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, that rhythm is kept alive by doctors, nurses and staff who have earned national recognition for excellent care and outcomes. A dedication to safety, quality and patient-centered care.
Most recently, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital achieved Primary Stroke Certification from Healthgrades. In stroke emergencies, every second counts. This designation means families don't need to leave our community for life-saving care. We have the technology and medical experts ready to act the moment patients arrive – delivering advanced medicine close to home.
This award-winning care is powered by our interdisciplinary care model. Providers from multiple specialties meet daily to discuss cases, address patient needs and identify barriers to safe, successful discharge. It's collaboration in action, where diverse voices and expertise unite to create remarkable care.
At Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, we strive to be known not just as a place of healing, but as a place where patients feel confident they're in the best possible hands.
Expert Care for Moms and Babies
Few decisions carry as much trust as choosing where to welcome a new life. At the Bronson BirthPlace in Battle Creek, we honor that trust. Over the past 15 years, we have built a maternity program known for delivering safe, comfortable care during one of life's most meaningful moments.
Our achievements include:
- Economic Alliance for Michigan (EAM) Excellence Award: A recognition of success in delivering high-quality maternity care with outstanding clinical outcomes.
- Gold Designation for Maternal Health: Exact protocols that support safety and well-being across the birthing process.
- Baby-Friendly Designation: A commitment to standards that promote healthy breastfeeding and immediate parent-child bonding.
From the first ultrasound to all the firsts that follow, our team is dedicated to giving the next generation the healthiest possible start—elevating the patient experience at every stage.
New Technology with a Local Touch
For 15 years, we've remained at the forefront of medical innovation – pioneering new approaches and the latest technology to meet changing community needs. Major investments in state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and facility upgrades help us blend modern medicine with deeply personal care.
One example is DAX software. This is an AI tool that records a doctor’s notes, so they don't have to do it manually. This lets them spend less time at a computer and more time with their patients.
At our cancer center, we have seen a 10% increase in the number of patients. To help ensure timely, high-quality care, we:
- Added a second linear accelerator, increasing access to advanced radiation therapy with extreme precision
- Completed major facility renovations, including adding more exam rooms
- Updated the lobby and waiting area, providing a calming environment for patients and loved ones
Additionally, our partnership with Oaklawn and Insight Coldwater hospitals allows patients in Marshall and Coldwater to receive high-quality consultation, chemotherapy and infusion care closer to home under the guidance of Bronson's Dr. Timothy Cox. This makes it easier to access advanced treatments at the Bronson Cancer Center when needed.
For those facing a medical emergency, Bronson Battle Creek Hospital's Level IV Trauma Center serves as the backbone of our community's safety net, ready 24/7 for whatever challenges arise. And, because Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo is the region's only Level I Trauma Center, patients at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital who require more advanced care have immediate access to the highest level of emergency services in the area.
Training Future Doctors
To make sure our community has great doctors for years to come, we started a residency program. We partner with Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine to train new doctors. This partnership gives the next generation of doctors firsthand experience addressing our region's unique health challenges. Residents are vital team members, participating in complex cases, contributing to clinical improvements and engaging in community health initiatives. Many of them choose to stay in the area after they finish their training, strengthening both Bronson and our community.
We believe health starts in the community, not just in the hospital. We are more than a healthcare provider; we are a community partner invested in Battle Creek's health and wellbeing.
Recent Community Initiatives
- Preventative Screenings: We partner with organizations like Sprout BC and Southwestern Michigan Urban League to host community events such as Health & Wellness Popups and back-to-school celebrations. Events like these provide free blood pressure and blood sugar checks to catch potential health risks early. We've also launched monthly clinics with The Southwestern Michigan Urban League, offering health education and screenings for common concerns.
- Free Cancer Screenings: Throughout the year, we host events where individuals, especially those with limited or no access to health insurance, can receive no-cost screenings for breast, colon and prostate cancers. This helps more people catch cancer early when more treatment options are available.
- Health Education: Free nutrition classes, fitness programs and wellness checks help our neighbors stay healthy and out of the hospital.
- Community Daycare: Recognizing the need for reliable, high-quality childcare, we partnered with Battle Creek Community Partners, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Garden of Dreams Community Preschool & Childcare to create a new center opening in summer 2026. This initiative supports workforce development and strengthens local families.
Many Voices. One Mission.
The future looks bright for Battle Creek. We couldn't do this important work without community support and the dedication of our team. As we celebrate 15 years as part of the Bronson Healthcare system—and as Bronson Healthcare celebrates 125 years strong—we honor the providers, nurses, support staff and volunteers who make Bronson Battle Creek Hospital what it is today. Each person plays a part in the symphony of health and hope that resonates as we advance the health of our communities.
And to every patient and family who trusts us with their care: It is an honor to be your healthcare partner.
We look forward to the next 15 years of health, hope and healing.
