Five Tips for Bicycle Safety

During National Bicycle Safety Month in May, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up with Bronson Trauma Services to encourage more people to bike, ride safely and wear helmets.

Here are Five Tips to Practice Bicycle Safety:

    1. There is safety in numbers! Studies show that drivers are MORE careful when they see more cyclists on the road. If you can, ride in a group.
    2. Protect your brain! When riding a bicycle, always wear a helmet.
    3. If you see a cyclist, slow down! Bicyclists are most often killed by drivers who strike them with the front of their vehicle at high speeds.
    4. Make room! When you pass a bicycle, give them three or more feet of space.
Be sure to check your state’s specific laws to ensure you are giving the correct amount of space.
    5. In 2020, 2.4% of all traffic fatalities were bicyclists. Drivers on the road need to be aware of their surroundings.

    Avoid Tragedy:

    • Slow down.
    • Buckle up.
    • Drive sober.
    • Don’t drive distracted.
