How to Decorate Safely for the Holidays

As we enter the holiday season in December, our hearts are filled with joy and excitement as we celebrate with our children. It’s a wonderful time to come together, give thanks and create lasting memories. Some of us may have holiday trips planned, while others may take a short drive to visit family nearby. Many of us also begin putting up decorations to bring the festive spirit into our homes. To help ensure a safe and happy celebration, here are some important safety tips.

Tree Safety

When choosing a tree, check for freshness if it’s real, or look for the “fire resistant” label if it’s artificial. Place the tree away from radiators, portable heaters and fireplaces to reduce the risk of fire.

Lights and Electrical Safety

Check all lights, even new ones, to ensure wires are not fraying. Hang outdoor lights using hooks or insulated staples—avoid nails or tacks. Make sure lights are connected to a circuit with a circuit breaker or are properly grounded to prevent electrical shocks. Always turn off lights and decorations before going to bed to avoid fire hazards.

Decorations and Small Items

Inspect ornaments that contain lithium or button batteries to make sure they are secure, as these can be dangerous if ingested by children. Keep sharp or glass decorations out of reach of kids. Be cautious with wrapping materials—wrapping paper, bags, and other packaging can pose choking or suffocation hazards for infants.

Plants and Berries

Some holiday plants can be toxic to children. Keep mistletoe berries, Jerusalem cherry, amaryllis and holly berries out of reach.
