Plastic Surgery After Childbearing

Pregnancy and childbearing can result in changes to the body. The changes and their effects can be as individual as the person. The most common concerns are changes to the breast and abdomen.

Altered hormone levels during pregnancy can cause general breast enlargement and stretching of the skin envelope. Once breastfeeding is stopped or suppressed, a decrease in the number of breast lobules can ultimately result in breast volume loss. This outcome of this enlargement and reduction process can produce an abundance of loose skin that may produce a deflated appearance.

A plastic surgeon can discuss options for restoring upper breast volume, removing breast skin that has lost its elasticity or both. Restoring volume and altering shape to the breast after pregnancy most often involves the use of an implant. Implants are available in different sizes, shapes, fill volume and surface type to accommodate the individual patients needs, goals and budget.

For those concerned with nipple position and tightening loose skin, a mastopexy, or breast lift, may be the appropriate option. It can also be done in combination with a breast implant if there is a desire to increase volume, tighten the skin envelope and reposition the nipple.

Pregnancy can also affect the skin and muscles around the abdomen. An abdominoplasty operation, commonly known as a tummy tuck, removes loose skin between the navel and pubic area. This tightens the skin above the navel. With the addition of internal sutures, the abdominal wall can also be tightened. Though not as common, patients with little skin sagging may benefit from liposuction alone.

Plastic surgery provides us an opportunity to improve form, function and improve quality of life. One of the things I enjoy most is the ability to have an impact on quality of life. We have an opportunity to meet people where they are and hopefully improve their individual situation.

Surgery and Recovery

Both breast rejuvenation and abdominoplasty surgeries are done on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia. Recovery is generally two weeks for light activity and a month for more strenuous work.

Though minimal, patients are left with permanent scarring. It’s important to get specifics from your surgeon. Like with any surgery, complications are possible, and your surgeon will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure.

Seeking plastic surgery procedures to change body appearance is a very personal decision. The options and timing of these procedures are just as personal. These are just a few of the many options available to help achieve specific desired changes to appearance after the childbearing years are complete.
