Tips for Firework Safety

Every year, Americans across the country come together to celebrate the Fourth of July. There are many ways to celebrate the holiday - including the tradition of watching fireworks and lighting sparklers. Though fun to watch, fireworks can be extremely dangerous. When safety measures are not in place, they can result in burns, lacerations, sprains and even death. Check out these tips for having fun and staying safe this Fourth of July.

Tips to Celebrate Safely:

  • Use glow sticks for a fun lightshow. Kids should never play with or set off fireworks or sparklers. Did you know that sparklers can burn as hot as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit? That is hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Keep water nearby. When your lightshow is over, pour water over all fireworks or other flammable objects. This will prevent unintentional fires from starting. Also have water nearby in case of emergency.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move quickly away.
  • Move to a safe distance after lighting fireworks. Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.
  • If the fireworks don’t light, throw them away. Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Stay sober. Do not use fireworks or sparklers while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
