Six Tips for Motorcycle Safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is partnering with Bronson Trauma Services to remind all motorists about motorcycle safety. As summer approaches with warmer temperatures throughout the country, road travel season begins.

Safe riding and driving practices, and cooperation from all road users, will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation’s highways.

Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Drive and ride sober
  • Slow down and observe all traffic laws.
  • Be aware. Think proactively about hazards you may encounter and give yourself enough time to react.
  • Yield to motorcyclists, especially while turning at intersections.
  • Don’t drive distracted.
  • Wear appropriate gear. Be sure to wear high-visibility personal protective gear and Department of Transportation (DOT)-compliant motorcycle helmets. Learn how to identify a safe, DOT-compliant helmet.

Additionally, completing a rider education and training course can ensure a safer riding experience. All transportation vehicles should do their part and share the road to ensure a safe driving and riding experience for all.
