Understanding Lymphedema Therapy: A Vital Tool for Breast Cancer Recovery

Bronson is proud to offer breast cancer survivors comprehensive care during recovery. This includes lymphedema therapy, a treatment that can improve a survivor’s quality of life after breast cancer.

What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling when fluid builds up in the body, most often in the arm, hand, chest or breast. This can happen after breast cancer surgery or radiation therapy. Not every breast cancer survivor will get lymphedema, and our current treatment strategies have significantly reduced the number of survivors who develop lymphedema. But those who have radiation or lymph nodes removed may be at increased risk. Lymphedema can appear immediately after cancer treatment or even years later. Signs include the risk of swelling, heaviness, aching or swelling.

Who Should Get Lymphedema Therapy?

Lymphedema therapy is recommended for anyone who feels swelling or pain following breast cancer treatment. Starting therapy early is important. It can help reduce the risk of infection or stiffness.

Certain groups may be at higher risk for lymphedema, including those who have had multiple lymph nodes removed or infections after surgery. Studies also show that Black, Hispanic and Asian women may have more severe symptoms of lymphedema.

What Does Lymphedema Therapy Involve?

Lymphedema therapy is a specialized treatment that includes:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a gentle massage that helps move fluid out of the affected area.
  • Compression therapy, the use of sleeves or bandages to reduce swelling and help move fluid.
  • Exercise to improve lymph flow and movement.
  • Skin care to prevent infection and maintain skin health.

Education and self-care to empower patients to manage symptoms at home.

Benefits of Lymphedema Therapy

Although lymphedema cannot be cured, therapy can improve comfort, function and confidence. After therapy many survivors often report:

  • Reduced swelling and pain
  • Better range of motion
  • Fewer infections
  • Improved body image and emotional well-being

With lymphedema therapy, survivors can take control of their recovery and live with less pain after breast cancer.
