KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Inspired by the popular television fitness reality show “The Biggest Loser,” the Bronson Athletic Club is launching its fourth in-depth, 12-week Weight Loss Challenge on June 12. The challenge consists of an introductory seminar, 12 group-training sessions with a certified personal trainer, a nutritional seminar featuring renowned author and trainer Chris Johnson, the On Target Living Nutrition book, and weekly nutrition recommendations and workout plans. The Weight Loss Challenge can help people with a variety of goals including losing weight, running a mile without stopping, decreasing cholesterol levels or simply feeling better.
Motivated by the success of adults during Weight Loss Challenge, the Bronson Athletic Club is launching a 10-week Teen Fitness Challenge on June 19 for ages 12 to 17. The teen challenge consists of an introductory seminar, 10 group training sessions with a certified personal trainer, a nutritional seminar and weekly nutrition recommendations and workout plans geared toward teens. This program is designed to give teens of all fitness levels the opportunity to have fun and make new friends while working out.
Participants in the BAC’s most recent Weight Loss Challenge for adults lost more than 1200 pounds. First, second and third place winners of the challenge were chosen at the end of 12 weeks (based on percentage of weight loss) and received prizes.
The grand prize winner, Donna Schuring, 48, of Portage, lost 60 pounds and received three months of free dues and four free personal training sessions from the BAC.
Donna says, “I have struggled with my weight for the last 10 years. The Bronson Weight Loss Challenge (WLC) helped me stay committed to living a healthier lifestyle, which ultimately led to a significant weight loss. The WLC was a first-class program and I am so thankful to have been a part of. The trainers tailored each workout to everyone in the group, regardless of their age or fitness level. I couldn't be happier with my results. It is a life changing experience. I cannot wait to start the next challenge.”
There was a three-way tie for second place. Second place winners Pam Grosvenor, Jenn Bussies and Shawn Sieplinga each lost 23 pounds – 10.5 percent of his or her body weight – and won one month of BAC dues and three personal training sessions.
“The BACs Weight Loss Challenge provided me with the jump start I needed in choosing to live a healthier lifestyle. Facing a ‘milestone birthday’ mid-summer, I wanted to have better control of my health as I started a new decade. The WLC provided the necessary structure, discipline, accountability and motivation I needed,” says Pam Grosvenor.
There was a five-way tie for third place as each participant lost nine percent of his or her body weight. Third place winners received two personal training sessions for their hard work and dedication:

- Amy and Eric Schwartz lost 17 lb
- Wendy Ballett lost 15 lbs
Wendy Ballett, says, “The WLC was a great experience. I came to look forward to the challenging group workouts every week. The nutrition and workout information encouraged me to make dietary changes that would give me better health and more energy at the end of each day. The WLC has equipped me with new habits that I hope to have forever.”
The Weight Loss Challenge is open to both club members and nonmembers at a cost of $247 for Bronson Athletic Club members and $297 for nonmembers for the entire 12-week program. The Teen Fitness Challenge is open to both club members and nonmembers at a cost of $200 for Bronson Athletic Club members and $257 for nonmembers for the entire 10-week program.
