1400 Pounds Lost During Bronson Athletic Club Weight Loss Challenge

September 17, 2010

Inspired by the popular television fitness reality show "The Biggest Loser," the Bronson Athletic Club is launching another edition of in-depth, 12-week Weight Loss Challenge on September 20, 2010. The challenge consists of an introductory seminar, 12 group-training sessions with a certified personal trainer, a nutritional seminar featuring renowned author and trainer Chris Johnson, the On Target Living Nutrition book, and weekly nutrition recommendations and workout plans. The Weight Loss Challenge can help people with a variety of goals including losing weight, running a mile without stopping, decreasing cholesterol levels or simply feeling better.

Participants in the BAC's most recent Weight Loss Challenge for adults lost more than 1400 pounds. During the past four programs, a total of 5700 pounds has been lost. First, second and third place winners of the challenge were chosen at the end of 12 weeks (based on percentage of weight lost) and received prizes.

There was a two-way tie for the grand prize. Julie Callaway, 40, of Kalamazoo and Donna Schuring, 48, of Portage, each lost 15.5 percent of their body weight, 35 pounds and 28 pounds, respectively). First prize winners received three months of free dues and four free personal training sessions from the BAC.

About the experience, Julie says, "After losing my father to lung cancer two years ago, I decided I needed to find myself again. As a former college swimmer and mother of five, I weighed more in June 2010 than ever before. My back and knees hurt, I had no energy and felt preoccupied with my weight. During the first seminar, we were told you needed to have a "why" in order to finish well. Scared to death but committed, I started this journey. After three weeks my old competitive self started to emerge and drove me each week. I lost inches I never want to see again and turned fat into muscle. I have energy and the pain in my lower back is gone. This is an awesome program."

Donna is a second-time winner of the Weight Loss Challenge and has lost a total of 93 pounds, since she began the first challenge in January of this year. She says, "I have struggled with my weight for the last 10 years. The Bronson Weight Loss Challenge (WLC) helped me stay committed to living a healthier lifestyle, which ultimately led to a significant weight loss. The WLC was a first-class program and I am so thankful to have been a part of. The trainers tailored each workout to everyone in the group, regardless of their age or fitness level. I couldn't be happier with my results. It is a life changing experience."

There was a three-way tie for second place. Second place winners Shauna Schrader, Gary Stewart and Kerry Tapper each lost 11 percent of his or her body weight. Shauna lost 25 pounds, while Gary and Kerry each lost 20 pounds. Second prize winners each won one month of BAC dues and three personal training sessions.

Shauna says, "I am thrilled I decided to take the Weight Loss Challenge as it has been an amazing journey and transformation in my life. All aspects of good health are included in the program including physical, mental, and dietary. I have never stuck with a program for more than a couple of weeks, but this challenge helped me get going, stay focused and be accountable for my own good health and success. I feel so much better since starting on the path to continued good health - and smaller jean sizes!"

There was a two-way tie for third place as each participant lost 8.5 percent of her body weight. Third place winners, Susan Haught who lost 21 pounds and Sally Mulder who lost 15 pounds, each received two personal training sessions for their hard work and dedication.

Sally had this to say about the Weight Loss Challenge, "The BAC Weight Loss Challenge has been a great experience! Even the smallest changes make the biggest difference. I looked forward to the next group workout every week! No matter what your reason for joining the challenge, it will far exceed your expectations. You gain so much more than weight loss. I have gained more self-confidence and the knowledge needed to stick with the changes that I've made. I encourage everyone who has been thinking about it to do it. It is so worth it and I can't wait to join the next one!"
