400 Walkers Raise $15,000 To Support The Children's Hospital at Bronson

October 09, 2008

Community members helped raise $15,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Bronson on October 5 by participating in Walk Across America, a 5k walk to promote healthy lifestyles for children and raise money for seriously ill and injured children. This was the first national fundraising event in collaboration with Together for Kids and the Bronson Health Foundation.

“It is a testament to the dedication and support of Bronson staff and the community that we had such great participation this first year, exceeding our goals,” said James Loker, M.D., medical director of The Children’s Hospital at Bronson. “This support is vital for Bronson to be a national leader in healthcare quality, attracting and retaining top specialists and sub-specialists, providing patient and family centered care, and providing all families – regardless of their ability to pay – access to quality pediatric care close to home.”

Serving 40,000 children annually in virtually every specialty in children’s health, The Children’s Hospital at Bronson provides care to all people, regardless of ability to pay. Bronson is the largest Medicaid provider outside of southeast Michigan. In addition, it is the only hospital in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas providing pediatric inpatient care and is one of only six children’s hospitals in Michigan. Bronson is also the area’s only Level I Trauma Center for both children and adults.

The Children’s Hospital at Bronson is dedicated to providing excellence in pediatric care in the face of mounting challenges. Countless children around the nation today face increasing challenges to their health and well-being—challenges ranging from the growing numbers of uninsured kids to the steadily climbing statistics on childhood obesity. Meanwhile, funding for children’s healthcare from public and private payers is shrinking. Together for Kids serves as a catalyst for fundraising to help member hospitals across the country tackle these challenges and bring better healthcare to more of America’s children. As a member of Together for Kids, The Children’s at Bronson shares their commitment to raising money to help hospitalized children.

Walk Across America is part of a national fundraising campaign with member hospitals of Together for Kids. Its goal is to promote healthy lifestyles for children and raise money for seriously ill and injured children. As the only member hospital in Michigan of Together for Kids, The Children’s Hospital at Bronson is the recipient of all funds raised locally.

“Putting on this walk was a great example of teamwork, and I look forward to everyone coming together to do it again next year,” says Dr. Loker.
