Nearly 300 Bronson Battle Creek associates were honored recently-- one for her caring concern in helping a patient and their family, others for service milestones (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years) that translate into more than 10 million hours of service, as part of the annual BBC associate recognition celebration.
Jennifer Porter, a registered nurse who works as a BBC case manager, received the hospital’s 2011-2012 Annual Outstanding Recognition Award. The winner is chosen from those who received the Above & Beyond awards during the year. The honor is given to those who demonstrate exemplary actions that embrace the organization's mission and values.
Porter has worked at BBC for a little over five years. She was singled out for this award based upon her exceptional customer service above and beyond her daily duties.
Earlier this year, a patient who had only a few days to live, was being discharged to hospice. Her family wanted the patient to be baptized before she passed. Within a short time, Porter made those arrangements to take place in the hospital room. She also contacted an ambulance company that agreed to allow the patient’s family to ride in the ambulance to the hospice residence, not a typical option based upon ambulance policies.
Often when a patient is ‘transferred’ to another site, their medical routine needs to be halted, if only temporarily. But, wanting to make certain her patient was safe and comfortable in her final days, Porter arranged for the treatments to continue uninterrupted during the ambulance ride.
Because she was watching over and caring for the patient and the family, Porter counseled with the family so they would know what options were available to them and their loved one.
Her knowledge of patient resources in the community allowed her to provide an exceptional care experience to the patient her final days. Porter truly went above and beyond.
