Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network have designated Bronson Battle Creek as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.  The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care.

Bronson Methodist Hospital was also the recipient of Blue Distinction honors for its cardiac program and for expertise and efficiency in delivering specialty care in hip and knee replacement, as well as in spine.

“We’re honored to be recognized with the Michigan Blues® designation, which validates our commitment to clinical excellence,” says Anne Regling, interim CEO of Bronson Battle Creek.  “A top designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield demonstrates the exceptional care that our physicians, nurses, and staff in our Orthopaedic Renewal Center deliver to the patients and families in our community who come to us for hip and knee replacement.”

“Congratulations to Bronson Battle Creek on earning the Blue Distinction designation for Hip and Knee Replacement,” said David Share, M.D., senior vice president, Value Partnerships, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.  “This designation, and the hospital’s participation in initiatives that improve quality and safety in these areas, demonstrate a focus on continuous improvement yielding safer patient care.”

Research indicates that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers.  The program provides consumers with tools to make better-informed healthcare decisions.

The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities were developed with input from a panel of expert physicians. To be designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, the following types of criteria were evaluated.

  • Established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care, and a full range of patient support services with full accreditation by a CMS-deemed national accreditation organization
  • Experience and training of program surgeons, including case volume
  • Quality management programs, including surgical checklists as well as tracking and evaluation of clinical outcomes and process of care
  • Multi-disciplinary clinical pathways and teams to coordinate and streamline care, including transitions of care
  • Shared decision-making and preoperative patient education
