Bronson Battle Creek Doctor Receives Healthcare Leadership Award
Longtime Bronson Battle Creek Cancer Care Center medical oncologist Stephen Smiley, MD, is the recipient of the 2014 Dale G. Griffin Healthcare Leadership Award. The Griffin Award recognizes exemplary contributions that improve the quality and accessibility of health care in greater Battle Creek.
Dr. Smiley has served in Battle Creek for more than 30 years. He was originally invited here in 1983 to help develop a cancer program at the former Leila Hospital. He became the first medical director of oncology that year and has served with the cancer center ever since. Dr. Smiley has been honored for his leadership and participation in research and clinical trials, has served as president of the Calhoun County medical society, and has been medical director of hospice services for three decades.
The Cancer Care Center that Dr. Smiley helped create is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, multi-specialty center. The center is nationally recognized and accredited as a comprehensive community cancer program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Cancer Care Center has also received the Commission on Cancer’s ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ – one of only 25 hospitals in the country to earn that award three times in a row.
The Dale G. Griffin Healthcare Leadership Award was created to honor the many contributions of longtime healthcare trustee and community volunteer Dale Griffin – who passed away in 2001. The Griffin Award is given annually by Bronson Battle Creek.
Dr. Smiley is the fifteenth recipient of the Griffin Award. Past winners have included healthcare trustees, members of the medical staff, and community leaders.
