Bronson Battle Creek Receives Five-Star Rating for Total Knee Replacement

Bronson Battle Creek (BBC) has earned a five-star rating for total knee replacement according to findings released in American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation.

“We’re extremely pleased to be recognized for the quality of orthopedic care we provide at Bronson Battle Creek,” said Cheryl Knapp, chief quality officer for BBC, and vice president, system quality standards and accreditation for Bronson Healthcare system. “Achieving a five-star rating from Healthgrades for total knee replacement surgery demonstrates the exceptional care that our physicians, nurses and staff deliver to patients and families every day.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to common conditions and procedures. The report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically among hospitals, ranging from five-star (statistically better than expected), three-star (statistically as expected) and one-star (statistically worse than expected) categories.

In addition to performing well above the Healthgrades national average for total knee replacement, BBC is designated a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for both knee and hip replacement (2013). It has also been recognized as one of the safest hospitals in the nation and the only hospital in Calhoun County to earn an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group for the past four score cycles.

“Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons perform hundreds of joint replacements every year, and offer safe, innovative procedures including robot-assisted joint replacement and minimally invasive surgery to help reduce pain and recovery time,” Knapp added.

Education is another key component of the orthopedic program. BBC provides classes to prepare patients and their families on what can be done before and after surgery to help speed recovery. Individual and group physical therapy follows surgery to help the patient regain mobility.
